A life changing read!
From Sand and Ash is a harrowing story of love and faith shrouded in death and despair.
Amy Harmon brings together the best and the worst of humanity on these pages, paving this journey with violence and bravery, horror and love.
It's a ruthless barrage of emotions, this story, a relentless war between life and death, between good and evil, illustrated exquisitely by an author whose writing prowess knows no bounds.
I was torn between eagerly unearthing the twists and turns that would surely come with each turn of the page, and dreading what was to come, dreading this book ending at all.
The story of Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco is as enchanting as it is chilling.
The love they share is forbidden, both by duty and by law.
But their attraction, the absolute truth of their lifelong love is a beautiful, palpable thing that consumes the reader despite the horrific circumstances in which that love exists.
I've read many books of the true accounts of holocaust survivors, seen the movies and documentaries, taken classes concentrating on this area of study.
But never before have I been made to fall in love with an individual, with a couple, with a family, before I took such a horrific journey with them.
To feel as though you know their strength, to get to know their life up until the moment it is stolen away, to know their helplessness in the face of something so unjust and so terrifying, it changes the way you look at the world, to see such atrocities through their eyes.
This may be a fictionalized account inspired by true events, but you won't convince my heart Eva and Angelo aren't real.
This story weaves it's way under your skin and into your soul so you feel every step of their journey, of their fight, of this miracle.
It's both beautiful and tortuous what Amy Harmon does here, but it's so right.
We don't truly know fear and loss and hopelessness until we take this journey ourselves.
Opening this book, turning these pages, moving along with Eva and Angelo is taking the journey ourselves.
This is absolutely a story of survival and love.
But, more, From Sand and Ash is a poignant reminder of where we all come from, that no matter where we live or who we pray to or what we believe in, we all come from the same place.
We are all made of the same things.
We all seek joy, we all look to find purpose.
We all love and play and pray and laugh and hope, and we all just want to be understood.
Above all else, we just want to be understood.
That message screamed at me on every page, in every word.
Our world would be such a beautiful, peaceful, harmonious one if we sought to understand each other instead of judging each other for the ways we are different, for the God we pray to, for where each of our trees first took root.
The Law of Moses taught me that we should be celebrating our differences instead of being afraid to point them out, to label them.
From Sand and Ash takes that sentiment and drives it home in a way that simply can't be ignored.
It's a brutal demonstration of what comes when we stop trying to understand each other, when we stop trying to relate, when we take what makes us different and use it as a means to divide us, to hurt each other, to push each other away.
We need this message.
We need this book.

It'll remind you that we're all the same where it matters, that we've all come from the same place regardless of where we're going.
It'll inspire you to be better.
It'll demand you pay closer attention to the opportunities to do something important.
It will humble you, empower you, it'll strengthen your awareness of your world, your history, your place in it.

I was overcome with so much emotion while reading this brutally beautiful story.
I was painfully terrified.
I was both angered and uplifted, both defeated and empowered, broken yet healed.
These characters, this fictionalized truth swathed in Harmon's unparalleled storytelling and her breathtaking writing style make for an epic story of bravery, love, resilience and loss that is both haunting and heartwarming all at once.
As long as I live, I will carry this story with me.
A good book, but a trifle predictable and over the top.
Some of the plot twists and turns were a little too much.
The author clearly did her research, and I wonder if she is a jackpot mean a fine non fiction book, "Under His Very Windows" by Zucotti, as a good source to be able to turn fact into fiction.
The author clearly felt for her character's plight, and truly understood the facts of what happened during that terrible time in Rome.
Yet as the story progresses it becomes a little bit too unbelievable, too coincidental, even for that chaotic time.
The end of the book was affecting, and I did find it a good read over all.
I am glad I read it, I just wished I hadn't guessed much of the plot in advance.
There are a lot of characters in this book who come and go, if I re-read it, I will make a list of who they are, sometimes it was hard to keep track of them.

I tried to brace myself for this story.
I knew it would be a tough read and I knew what would eventually happen.
I was not prepared for the onslaught of emotions this story brought out in me.
There was one point when I just sat and wept over the horrific events that the innocent victims of this senseless war endured.
And in true Amy Harmon fashion, she manages to find beauty within the horror, and teaches us lessons in even the ugliest of circumstances.
Amy does not get overly detailed about politics or the war, and everything was broken down into simple facts and explanations.
She spared us the gory details and yet still manages to paint such a distinct portrayal of the suffering that took place during this time.
The common theme within all of her books is that love and faith conquers all, and how hope and resilience can help you rise above even the most difficult of situations.
I think her trademark message has never shined more brightly than it does in From Sand and Ash.
I really hope that people give this book a chance.
We need to remember the atrocities that happened in Europe during WW2 so that millions did not die in vain, and nothing like this will EVER happen again.
Thank you Amy, for honoring the memory of my Jewish ancestors and the millions of others who lived during this awful time in our history.
These are just a few of the dozens of powerful quotes I highlighted.
I am hopeful for the first time in years.
And strangely enough, I find myself convinced that God loves his children — all his children — that he loves me, and that he provides moments of light and transcendence amid the constant trial.
Because God is quiet.
He is quiet, and my anguish is so intense, so incredibly loud, that right now I can only do my will and hope that somehow, it aligns with his.
Through our roots and branches.
The family is immortality.
And Hitler has destroyed not just branches and roots, but entire family trees, forests.
All of them, gone.

From Sand and Ash is so much more than a whimsical romantic tale.
It's history sprinkled with a love story.
In a time where hope was hard to find and God was quiet no matter what God you prayed to, this was a time you had to hang on to your faith or give up entirely.
In the womb ash amazon heart beats.
That little soul has no idea or choice as to where they will end up and how they will be raised.
The beliefs of each child is from those around them.
It starts with where they live and especially what religion their loved ones practice.
World War II is the perfect example of how you can't help where you were born or what God you serve but you absolutely can love, live and support anyone in railing telugu meaning choose to if you find the strength.
So many fought the only way they could by hiding and those that hid them were truly the best example of Love in human form.
This is where God is love.
Amy took a true life emotional topic, a tormented part of world history and gave it faces.
So many faces and so many hearts.
I felt such despair when this story started because this was such a tumultuous time and place.
Our hero Angelo and heroine Eva were two characters that were vividly portrayed in every single way.
Growing up together and falling in love when it's forbidden truly had my heart racing in fear and in excitement.
Such heartbreaking choices that had to be made.
Angelo was a true hero in every way.
Eva was strong and loving.
For every single time Angelo struggled with his faith and for every time Eva fought to never give up I held on to hope for these two.
This was a time of such devastating circumstances and such horrible prejudice.
I was afraid for the hero and heroine from the start but I had faith that even if it all ended like so many lives ended back then that Amy would show humanity at its worst and at its best.
There were characters that stood out in bravery and and sacrifice.
I felt their stories mirrored so many out there that never got a chance to speak out and share.
Amy brought so much to life in this amazing tale.
Thankfully the check this out was the best I could hope for and the pain I felt was worth it even if it's only experienced in a story to see such a love story unfold but also to see how truly brave so many people were.
While so many stories in this era had such tragic endings we should be thankful we live in a time where we can be free to worship and to love.
I feel after ever single Amy Harmon book that I have been somewhat changed in a way only a magical story teller can achieve.
From Sand and Ash truly will stay with me always.

More than 5 Stars.
A beautiful story during an ugly time!
He too had risked everything, and he may have lost the only thing he would trade his immortality for.
As much as I tried to savor this story I had to eventually reach the end.
There is no question or doubt.
Amy Harmon is my favorite author.
Eva was the vise…and the vice.
From Sand and Ash is on the top of that list.
It was a beautiful love story about two and more amazingly brave heroic people during a sickening time.
For me that makes this book all the more special.
If you have any feelings for me at all, you will stay here until I come back for you.
If you have never read her books before than I highly recommend you do.

It has officially been over a month since I finished From Sand and Ash.
In 2013 I read my first Amy Harmon book, A Different Blue.
I remember reading it on the plane ride to Jamaica and being so in love with the writing and the story but more importantly sitting there in awe of how much time the author must have put into making the story perfect.
There was so much history woven into the book in a way that was just perfect and never overbearing.
Most importantly she continued to amaze me with her ability to step out of her box and try something new and then completely hit it out of the park as though she had been writing that genre since the day she was born.
From Sand and Ash is no exception to any of these things.
Amy Harmon put her heart and soul into this story and it showcases click here single bit of what makes her the best of the best.
For me, this book is like A Different Blue in that it has a TON of history wound through it all and I truly appreciated every single bit of it.
Sure, I know about the holocaust and how awful it was.
I read The Diary of Anne Frank as a young girl and it will forever stick with me.
None of those things have ever impacted me like this story.
Without giving anything away, I will just quickly say that this book answered a question I have had most of my life.
I always wondered how people could have just sit by and let this stuff happen right in front of their eyes.
This book showed me just how wrong I was and how many people did play a part in saving lives.
It is a beautiful story of love, loss, friendship, family, bravery, selflessness, heroism, war, evil and so much more.
It truly has everything anyone would want in a story and I just know that this one will touch the hearts of so many different people.
Most importantly, the ever-present theme of faith and the power or prayer will hit home with people through all walks of life.
At the very least, I will say that this story ripped my heart into pieces and then put it back together again more times than I can count.
I was a ball of anxiety for much of it.
And then I cried some more.
When I read the last line I saw there and sobbed for quite a while.
Then I moved on to talk to my friends that had read it.
And then I cried some more.
This story will stick with me forever and I know it will for many others too.
Infinite Stars for From Sand and Ash, a story more beautiful than the rest from one of the most amazing authors this world has to offer.
Thank you for sharing your light with us, Amy.
We are all better because of it.

Every time I pick up one of these author's, I am impressed with how she tackles new subjects, reinventing herself in a way, while still maintaining top quality writing that has made her one of my automatic 1-click authors.
This story is no different, as she takes on the Historical Romance genre with the highly emotional subject of World War II.
In all of the author's work, there are religious overtones, but none more so than this one.
It's inclusion in this story, complicates an already tough situation.
While the immediate reaction would be to say that it kept a couple apart, when you think of it on a deeper level, you realize the situation may have saved the other's life trying to be vague here.
This is the love story of Eva and Angelo, whose lives are forever changed with the Nazi occupation of Italy during World War II.
While there were moments of attraction over the years, the war seemed to make they more open, more honest to the feelings they shouldn't be feeling, particularly in Angelo's case.
I loved how their passion came out in the most inappropriate of times, it felt more reckless and real.
Aside from the horrors of that war and what acts were committed by the SS, you have a Jewish heroine who struggles day by day to survive.
As this is the second WWII book I've read this year, I'm more aware of how the citizens of this country were fooled to believe they stood a chance.
The Nazi occupation and the war crimes they committed were not overnight.
First they took away jobs, then possessions.
Slowly, they took away the people.
Or worse, ended things dramatically as a "lesson" to others.
The author does a great job of weaving history with fiction in such a way that make it entirely plausible.
You will find yourself not only praying for their survival, but praying they find a way to make things work, should they survive.
And yes, sadly, with that war, their survival is far from guaranteed.
On top of Eva and Angelo's strength to move forward day by day, both also have a good moral compass to do the right things despite the huge risks.
Both take chances that could end their lives, in the hopes of saving others.
Their selflessness made me, as a reader, cheer for them every step of the way.
Whether or not this is your genre, if you know this author's work, you just need to trust that she will deliver a beautifully compelling story that will stay with you.
Because she delivers once again.

Because this is my top read of 2016 i'm gonna give it a try, this will be long but hopefully it will make one person purchase and read this story.
Many readers are put off by the fact this book takes place in the past and or is a time period piece.
I implore youdo not let this hold you back!!
Yes many of us are romance readers however if you enjoyed Outlander, The Bronze Horseman, The Thorn Birds, The Nightingale, you will enjoy this book.
For those of you who have not read any of the above books I ask you.
Has Amy Harmon EVER let you down?
From Sand and Ash is an epic life story.
A love story of epic proportions.
Sometimes love can't dissuade war but love can be found in the depths of it.
Eva is a strong girl who grows to be a strong young woman.
She and her family befriend Angelo regardless of their religious differences but this too can sometimes have limits.
Choices are made during an era when time and feelings can be taken for granted.
Despite their religious differences Eva is confident and brave facing her growing feelings for Angelo.
She doesn't run from them or push them aside until the decision seems to have been made for her.
She finds herself surrounded by devastation, despair, and unbelievable circumstances.
Circumstances she can no longer be sheltered from.
Angelo, a young man, comes from a Catholic family and though society may feel his options in life are limited you'll understand when you read the book Angelo didn't seem to feel limited or restricted.
It was part of him but I never once felt he was in need or felt sorry for him.
The author does a good job at conveying his abilities and "manliness".
He becomes a protector for many.
Even though Angelo acknowledges his love for Eva he chooses to join the Catholic church out of his devotion and love of God and family.
This is the love he recognizes and knows.
Throughout the story readers feel the friendship and or romantic feelings these two yearn for whether together or apart.
A relationship which buds during our immaturity in our youth and angst develops into the true meaning.
The conflict of devotion and to whom to be devoted is questioned in different relationships throughout the story.
Peril surrounds Eva, Angelo, and Italians during this time.
Regardless of what I thought I knew from the atrocities of WWII I was not aware of the horrific devastation in Italy during this time.
I can not imagine the toll some of the scenes took on the author, my heart literally shattered in many parts of this story.
The author writes a well balanced story and it doesn't feel like a history lesson.
Throughout the story I asked myself, 'could I do that?
This poignant beautiful story is a reminder; we are humanity, we all are part of the same story.
Romance, friendship, duty, integrity, grace, bravery, forbidden love, religion, history, sacrifice are all elements found in From Sand and Ash.
Once the last page is turned the reader will be overwhelmed, more feelings than one word or thought can describe.
The writing is poignant, poetic, layered, and beautiful.
Will the beauty of acceptance and love prevail?
The beautiful way in which the author crafts her words surrounding the religious aspects of this book alone is brilliant.
I know I am a better person and reader for having read this book.
A relationship between a reader and an author is a gentle unique one.
One that is filled with trust, as books to readers and their reading time is so very precious.
To find an author where each book surpasses the last, their craft continues to develop beyond what readers can hope for in a book, and their talent is so diverse no topic is out of reach is quite simply a gift.
Amy Harmon is my Boo, my BAEour relationshipthough one sided, is a strong one.
I will never read another blurbteaser, reviews for her future works.
They will be one clicked and devoured without question.

Not your typical romance, but a rich, complex story about ordinary people doing extraordinary things in a time of extreme duress, prejudice, and hate.
The romance is a slow build along the way as you maneuver through war-torn Italy and the people who had to survive the occupation of Hitler's Nazi regime.
Bravery, self-sacrifice, and yes, love is seen throughout this story.
You can't help but be moved through this rich story.
Eva and Angelo have a complex relationship that starts in their childhood and blossoms into love, in spite of the insurmountable odds stacked against them.
If you have an interest in WWII history and want to "see" first hand how horrific it was to survive during the 1940's in Europe, this is a great book to read.
An added bonus is the two lovers who eventually find their way to each other.
Romance readers will love their story!

I enjoyed this novel for a few reasons.
My favorite genre is historical fiction with a full-bodied romance directly connected to the plot and this book definitely delivered.
The romance was essential but I felt that other parts of the novel were just as interesting like the backdrop of WWII and learning about the climate of Italy for Jewish people during that time and the harrowing experiences of people trying to survive during such darkness.
I genuinely liked the characters and rooted for them to survive and also wanted them to be together.
The h and H seemed real and tangible, they had flaws and endearing qualities which kept me interested.
The secondary characters were also likable although they didn't seem to go through the same development the main players did.
What I didn't like was the seemingly rushed ending.
I felt that the story was so rich and then the ending sort of felt more thrown together and the resolution was forced.
Also, this story doesn't feel completely fresh and has tinges of The Thorn Birds and The Bronze Horseman, which is perfectly fine, stories are going to sound similar to other things.
Overall, I would recommend, this is an interesting story with a touching romance at the heart with plenty of historical context that feels like the author did excellent research.
I think the characters are relatable and the ending is happy.

From Sand and Ash Amy Harmon 6 stars This review contains references to both the eBook and the audio book as we absorbed them both.
It is impossible for Amy Harmon to write a bad book, a semi-bad book or just a good book.
She writes exquisite books and this is no exception.
proveedores tragamonedas en mexico has taken me some time to process both the written and audio version of From Sand and Ash because it was and remains a difficult book to digest.
Difficult for me as I am not a particular fan of historical fiction and even less so of World War II and difficult in addition because of the subject matter…the blackest point in the history of our world so far.
Deeply researched by Ms Harmon, there is such validity to every word, you almost believed she transported herself back in time and actually LIVED it.
This is the story of a young American boy Angelo sent to Italy to enter the priesthood, albeit due to a prosthetic leg, and his placement with a Jewish family with a daughter who becomes his best friend Eva.
Told from both points of view, the book details how the Italian government, in capitulation to the German intent to annihilate the Jewish people, slowly eliminated Jewish identity through Racial Laws.
But it is distracting.
Every passage of this book…let me repeat.
If you have not read this book, please do.
And when you HAVE read this book, please LISTEN to it.
guzzle meaning is perhaps the finest work of a narrator I have ever heard.
Her capacity to capture Italian, German accents and words is sheer perfection.
She is also quite accomplished at being ALL characters, assigning them voices that are distinguishable and gender identifiable.
So there, every cell of my body loved this book.
My brain fired more thoughts, my heart beat louder, my stomach twisted in knots, my soul took a look at itself.
I love you, Amy Harmon and thank you.
